Why Choosing the Right Wedding Florist Matters: A True Story from Hurricane Irma

As owner of Fabbrini's Flowers in the Chicago area, I'm Jim Fabbrini, and I've helped create countless beautiful wedding days. But one experience stands out as a powerful reminder of why experience and dedication truly matter when selecting your florist.

Back in March 2017, a wonderful bride booked her September wedding with us at Fabbrini's Flowers. Everything was planned perfectly—until early September, when forecasts predicted Hurricane Irma barreling toward South Florida.

Here's the reality many don't know: Over 90% of cut flowers imported to the U.S. arrive by air through Miami International Airport, with the majority coming from Colombia and Ecuador. When Irma hit on September 10, 2017, MIA sustained significant damage and closed operations for days, disrupting cargo flights nationwide.

I had a hunch this would cause major shortages. While others waited, I sprang into action: driving to local wholesalers and calling florist friends across the area to source every stem we needed—roses, ranunculus, whatever her vision required.

My instinct was spot on. The airport closure led to widespread flower shortages that fall, leaving many Chicago-area brides without their ordered blooms or forced into last-minute substitutions.

But for our bride? Her wedding was stunning, exactly as dreamed—no compromises.

This story illustrates the difference a proactive, connected florist makes. Weddings are once-in-a-lifetime; unpredictable events happen. Choose someone who goes the extra mile (literally!) to ensure your day blooms beautifully.
